Brinkmanship is a political term describing an effort by one country or
official to gain an advantage over another by appearing willing to push a
dangerous situation to the brink such as by resorting to nuclear weapons. To
engage in brinkmanship is to appear willing to risk the destruction of the
world rather than to lose a particular conflict.
